Amalia begint bij Defensity College

Koning Willem-Alexander heeft prinses Amalia met ingang van dinsdag aangesteld bij het reservepersoneel van de Krijgsmacht, in de stand van matroos der derde klasse bij de Koninklijke Marine en in de stand van soldaat der derde klasse bij de Koninklijke Landmacht en de Koninklijke Luchtmacht. Dat heeft de RVD bekendgemaakt.

De Prinses van Oranje begint dinsdag haar opleiding aan Defensity College. Zij zal diverse theoretische modules en trainingen van de opleiding doorlopen en als werkstudent bij de Bestuursstaf van Defensie aantreden. Het onderdeel van de Algemene Militaire Opleiding is uitgesteld totdat zij volledig hersteld is van haar armbreuk. Na voltooiing van de AMO volgt de bevordering tot korporaal.

De prinses voert haar werkzaamheden onbezoldigd uit en haar studietijd wordt beschouwd als privé.

Defensity College heeft als doel studenten tijdens hun studie een bijbaan met inhoud te bieden en de zichtbaarheid en verbinding tussen krijgsmacht en samenleving te vergroten. Het programma is opgebouwd uit verschillende werkplekken, activiteiten, evenementen en opleidingen. Het programma draagt daarmee bij aan de persoonlijke, professionele en militaire ontwikkeling van de militaire werkstudent.

Luxemburg heeft een nieuwe vorst. Nerveus en een enkel woord vergetend, legde zaterdag groothertog Henri (45) in de Kamer van Afgevaardigden de eed af. Een half uur daarvoor had zijn vader, groothertog Jean (79), tijdens een korte plechtigheid in het paleis zijn troonsafstand getekend.

Tot de eregasten in het groothertogdom behoorden koningin Beatrix en het Belgische koningspaar. Prins Claus moest vanwege zijn operatie eerder in de week, verstek laten gaan.

De troonswisseling in Luxemburg was door groothertog Jean eind vorig jaar al aangekondigd en zou oorspronkelijk op 28 september plaatsvinden. Voor zijn familie is dat een bijzondere datum, omdat op die dag in 1919 tachtig procent van de Luxemburgse kiezers zich uitsprak voor behoud van de monarchie en daarmee vóór de regering van Jeans moeder groothertogin Charlotte.

De plechtigheden werden echter verschoven en aanzienlijk beperkt nadat Jeans jongste zoon Guillaume begin september levensgevaarlijk gewond raakte bij een auto-ongeluk in Frankrijk. Pas vorige week is de prins uit zijn coma ontwaakt. 

Luxemburg vierde daarom ingehouden feest. Na de inhuldiging van Henri klonken 101 saluutschoten en beierden in het hele land de kerkklokken. Het beloofde vuurwerk en de grote straatfeesten houden de Luxemburgers te goed tot volgend jaar april. Maar op het laatste moment werd het programma toch nog opgetuigd met een ‘aubade’ voor het paleis, uitgevoerd door de muziekkapel van de strijdkrachten. Henri is daarvan de nieuwe opperbevelhebber.

De Nederlandse monarchie mag in het buitenland dan bekend staan als ‘het fietsende koningshuis’, in Luxemburg laat de groothertogelijke familie de fiets staan en gaat men te voet. Henri en zijn in Cuba geboren vrouw Maria Teresa (44), hebben, met hun vijf kinderen er vrolijk achteraan hobbelend, zaterdag heel wat ommetjes gemaakt door het pittoreske stadscentrum.

Eerst de plechtige gang van het paleis naar het parlement, een afstand van niks omdat beide gebouwen aan elkaar vastzitten, maar daarna langs een andere, langere route terug naar het paleis. Maar ook voor de ontmoeting met de buitenlandse diplomaten, de dankdienst in de kathedraal en de ontvangst in het Luxemburgse stadhuis, wandelt de familie onder gejuich en veel applaus door de smalle straten van de hoofdstad.

Vanuit het stadhuis gaat het gezelschap zelfs nog even de weekmarkt op, waar het Luxemburgse rood-wit-blauw en talrijke foto’s van Henri en Maria-Teresa tussen de appels en peren steken. Ook hier maken honderden Luxemburgers van de gelegenheid gebruik om ‘grand-duc Heng‘ (Letzeburgs voor Henri) geluk te wensen.

Hij heeft het vooraf al gezegd: ,,Wij willen een andere stijl”. Moderner en opener dan zijn ouders, met meer contact met de Luxemburgers. Dat is ook de verwachting van de jeugd. ,,Het is goed dat Jean terugtreedt. Een nieuwe generatie moet een kans krijgen”, zegt een twintiger.

Henri hoopt dat er voor zijn gezin niet zo veel verandert.  ,,De Luxemburgers respecteren ons recht op privacy. Dat is erg fijn”, zegt de groothertog. ,,Ik verwacht dat we gewoon onze boodschappen in de stad kunnen doen zonder dat mensen ons aangapen”, voegt Maria Teresa daar als wens aan toe. De familie verhuist over enige tijd naar slot Colmar-Berg, maar Jean en echtgenote Joséphine-Charlotte, die er al 36 jaar wonen, hoeven geen haast te maken met hun vertrek.

In zijn toespraak tot het parlement bedankt Henri in het Letzeburgs ‘mengen Papp’ met een ‘herzleche Merci’. De nieuwe erfprins Guillaume, die volgende maand 19 jaar wordt, neemt binnenkort een aantal taken van zijn vader over. Hij wordt lid van de Raad van State en gaat handelsmissies leiden. Henri en Maria Teresa beginnen hun nieuwe taak deze week met officiële bezoeken aan de ‘grote buurlanden’ Frankrijk en Duitsland.

De aanwezigheid van koningin Beatrix, als altijd opvallend door haar hoed, heeft niet alleen te maken met goed nabuurschap. Haar overgrootvader koning Willem III immers was de laatste Nederlandse groothertog van Luxemburg. Omdat hij bij zijn overlijden in 1890 geen mannelijke nakomelingen meer had, ging de Luxemburgse troon over op een andere tak van het Huis Nassau.

Dat kwam voor de overgrootvader van Jean goed uit, want die was dertig jaar eerder aan de kant gezet in zijn Duitse hertogdom. Voor Luxemburg, dat door de Nederlandse koning-groothertogen min of meer was behoed van inlijving door Frankrijk, België en Duitsland, onderstreepte een ‘eigen’ vorstenhuis nog eens de onafhankelijkheid. 

Beatrix krijgt bij de rondgang door de stad veel bijval. Er zijn ook nogal wat Nederlandse bezoekers in de stad. ,,Wij zijn bijzonder vereerd met uw komst”, zegt premier Jean Claude Juncker in vlekkeloos Nederlands tegen de koningin. Beatrix verschijnt ook samen met de bijna voltallige groothertogelijke familie op het balkon van het paleis. Dit keer geen straatoproer, zoals bij haar eigen inhuldiging twintig jaar geleden, maar een luidkeels ‘vive vive’ van het enthousiaste publiek.

Zelfs bij de terugtredende groothertogin Joséphine-Charlotte – zus van de Belgische koning Albert – kan er dan een lachje af. Ze ziet er moe uit. Haar gezondheid laat al enkele jaren te wensen over en haar gezichtsvermogen is door een ziekte aangetast. De groothertogin is vrijdagavond pas met het laatste vliegtuig vanuit Parijs teruggekomen.

De afscheidsrede van haar man laat ze schieten. De afgelopen maand is ze nauwelijks geweken van het ziekbed van haar jongste zoon Guillaume. Direct na de lunch in het paleis vertrekt ze weer naar Frankrijk. Maar Joséphine-Charlotte, woensdag wordt ze 73 jaar, toont zich ontroerd door de hartelijke woorden van dank die de premier aan haar richt: ,,Zonder u had de groothertog zijn werk niet kunnen doen”.
